According to Discogs, their self-titled 10″ is their debut record. The 10” contains five songs, one is called Golden Showers, another one Nite Yacht which might already give you an idea about what we’re dealing with (hint: not Yacht Rock).

When Pitchfork premiered the track Krystal Tearz, they called Vulgar Fashion a “synth-punk/death-punk duo” which is fairly vague. The top 3 tags on last.fm are “synthpop”, “new wave” and “electronica” because people still haven’t realised that we live in 2013. Just think about the name Vulgar Fashion and suddenly, it will all become as plain as the day.

The press release for this 10″ contains the words: “Mmmmmagic ice cream. Maerc eci cigammmmM” and I sometimes think they’re kind of serious about that. If you ever give this record to a friend you will also recommend him or her to also listen to: Stuff that came out on Beläten, Spectrum Spools or Not Not Fun, maybe also Blanche Blanche Blanche, but definitely not John Maus or Ariel Pink, because that would seem far too obvious (plus, everyone you know knows them already). If your mother enters the room while Vulgar Fashion is playing, she will probably regret that she let you play all those weird video games and will inevitably wonder if those magazines she once found under your bed have ruined your life completely.

Due to the vaselinesque production it’s hard to  tell the songs apart, but the opener Krystal Liez is definitely more memorable than the annoying hookline in Pact With The Devil. Also, Nite Yacht is the stuff you’d want to listen to when you stand in the pouring rain in some shady backalley asking yourself why you’re covered in blood. Vulgar Fashion will matter to you if blurry pictures taken with digital cameras, nostalgia and the movie Blade Runner matter to you.

Overall, I give this 10″ five reblogs on tumblr, one VCR and a pair of enormous sunglasses that is to be worn ironically (but not really ironically).

The concept of briefviews is to provide some general and/or random information and insights without taking up too much of your time. Short, but not to the point. According to Discogs, Conversion is his 9th release, but that probably isn’t true as he is a rather prolific sound artist and often collaborates with others. This 12” contains 2 tracks which are almost equally long -  the first one 17 min. 37 sec., the second one 17 min 59 sec. That might or might not be a coincidence.

In a review published on ambientblog.net an anonymous reviewer claims that Conversion’s “combination of conceptual electronic music with a contemporary classical arrangement [was] unequalled, beyond competition” and, however untrustworthy some of those ambient-nerds are, he is probably right about that. The top 3 tags on last.fm are “ambient”, “drone” and “field recording”, which again proves that sometimes, mere vagueness comes next to the truth.

A random, fun and yet essential fact about Conversion: The original pieces (Labyrinthitis and Church) were recorded in Kirkegaard‘s ear and near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The pieces on this record however were performed by an orchestra (but not inside their ears or homes). If you ever give this record to a friend you will also recommend him or her to also listen to: The sounds of your own or Matthew Herbert’s body, Iannis Xenakis or maybe Geiger counters. If your mother enters the room while Conversion is playing, she probably won’t notice that you’re actually listening to music, but will consider consulting a psychiatrist thinking that those are the first signs of schizophrenia. Don’t do that to your mom, please, she deserves better.

There are neither memorable nor annoying moments on this record, which is not a bad thing at all. There aren’t any lyrics either, just like there is no rhythm (except for the one of your brain cells interacting while listening, probably). Conversion will matter to you if abstract art,  the whole Touch roster, pictures of abandoned buildings or frozen mountain lakes and painful beauty matter to you. You will listen probably listen to Conversion on quite expensive headphones because you’re that kind of person. In 20 years, this record will send fucking chills down your spine just like the first time you had put it on an cranked up the volume (listening with those headphones that cost more than my apartment, you snob).

Overall, I give this 12″ eleven psychacoustic hallucinations.
